I don’t remember where I found Thirteen Senses. That happens sometimes — an artist just appears in your library and you can’t trace the thread back to where it started. What I do know is that I’ve had their album The Invitation since around 2015, and something about it clicked immediately.

Because I play piano, I tend to notice when it’s doing real work in a band — not just filling space, but driving the song. Thirteen Senses are that kind of band. The piano is up front, the vocals are clean and clear, and the songs have a shape to them: they start soft and build into something bigger. It’s a satisfying arc when it’s done right, and they do it right.

From The Invitation, four tracks keep pulling me back: “Into the Fire,” “Do No Wrong,” “Automatic,” and “Lights Out.” They’re all great songs. If you like one, you’ll probably like all of them. Crystal Sounds, from their self-titled album, is another one worth seeking out.

Writing this post sent me back to look them up, and I found out they put out a new album after a ten-year hiatus. I haven’t heard it yet, but that’s a good problem to have — more to dig into.

Thirteen Senses are from Cornwall, in the UK, and somehow never broke through to the level their sound probably deserved.
