Whispers of the Wind started as music, and became a journey by accident. When the album was finally done — nine solo piano pieces, slow and calming with a few brighter stretches — I took a trip through the Pacific Northwest with my wife. Hiking through old-growth forests, driving up into the mountains, walking the coast. I put the album on in the car and it fit so well I went back and named every track after a piece of the trip. The music had already been there, waiting for the landscape to catch up.
The result is something that moves like a road trip moves — unhurried, full of scenery, with a clear sense of where you’re headed. It ends with “Journey’s End,” which says everything it needs to. Whether or not you’ve ever stood in a Pacific Northwest forest, the feeling the album is chasing is the same one you get when you’re somewhere beautiful and you actually stop thinking long enough to notice it.
